Vegan French Toast
French toast was originally created in medieval Europe as a tasty way to eat bread that had gotten a little old and stiff. The many recipes found suggests that it was meal enjoyed by the wealthy. French toast was originally made with white bread (only enjoyed by the elite) with the crust cut off that was soaked in milk and beaten eggs, then fried in oil. Mmm... sounds like a heart attack!
French toast has always been one of my favorite foods that I try to keep my distance from. Its definitely delicious, almost too delicious! I love toast, but drenched in milk and eggs and then fried?? There's got to be a better way...
I find it amazing that I can make such delicious vegan french toast without all the fat, salt, and animal foods people think it needs. Just substitute cow's milk with vegan milk, and eggs (only in this recipe) with flour and some nutritional yeast. Top it off with some bananas and a little syrup. Damn!! Now were talkin'!
If you feel like getting gourmet, thick raisin bread is amazing!
Items needed for preparation:
- Bowl (wide enough to dip bread)
- Bread (your choice)
- 1 cup soy/almond/rice milk
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 2 tbsp flour (i used whole wheat flour)
- 1 tbsp nutritional yeast
- Bananas for topping (highly recommended)
Step 1: Grease the pan, set on medium heat.
Step 2: In a bowl mix all the ingredients thoroughly. Dip both sides of the bread, and fry away! I love to top mine off with some banana slices and a dash of cinnamon. Mmm mm mmmm bananas go good with everything!
Bada-bing bada-boom, easy.
